Roll choice reasons explored
A University of Auckland political scientist is asking people how they make the choice between going on the Māori or general electoral role.
Lara Greaves says it’s a question she wrestled with herself when she was younger.
She expects the online survey to throw us a diverse range of reasons and spark some useful conversations.
“Some people would probably say they want to use that Māori electoral option to vote in more competitive races but I’ve heard people argue that it’s their right (to stay in the Māori roll). I have also heard people who are of Māori whakapapa, people like (ACT leader) David Seymour – who could participate in the survey if he’s listening – argue that they have different reasons and rationale for choosing the general roll,” Dr Greaves says.
