Mask up to get through winter crisis
Waipereira chief executive John Tamihere says it’s not time to let up on keeping Covid at bay.
There were 7975 new cases reported today, 797 people in hospital, and 22 deaths.
That’s on top of an extraordinarily high number of flu cases.
Mr Tamihere says the level of illness is like a log jam breaking, as people are mixing and mingling without masks and other public health measures.
Māori is particularly vulnerable to winter ailments and respiratory illness.
“So we just have to up our hygiene matters, our sanitation matters and wearing masks. You have to start looking after yourself better and that is all we are asking of our people, to just muscle up. By the 15th of September, we would have broken the back of this. We’ve just to protect ourselves and others along the way over the next six to eight weeks and we will be hunky dory,” Mr Tamihere says.
