Pharmac covers costs from Accuretic drug switch

People using the blood pressure drug Accuretic are being encouraged to talk to their doctor after it was recalled globally.
Pharmac director of operations Lisa Williams says it was taken off the market after it was found to contain an unsafe level of a cancer-causing substance, nitrosamine.
Pharmac is working with supplier Pfizer to find a substitute, and with the healthcare sector to ensure there are no extra costs for users.
“So if you need to go and see your doctor and it’s an extra visit you wouldn’t normally have to have, that will be funded and the dispensing fees from the pharmacy will also be paid for so this shouldn’t cost anyone who is affected any extra money,” Ms Williams says.
Around 4000 of the 36,000 people with prescriptions for Accuretic are Māori.
