Health sector change good for Māori says Waititi

Māori Party co-leader Rawiri Waititi is welcoming the health sector reforms as a chance to turn around disparities in Māori health.
On Friday Health New Zealand officially took over from the 21 district health boards, and the Māori Health Authority also came into existence.
Mr Waititi says time will tell what will happen, but it’s clear the previous bureaucracy-laden system has passed its use by date.
“Any change from the current system is going to be a change for the better good of Māori. We must have more community input. We must have more iwi and hapū input into our own oranga. there must be more investment into communities. There must be more investment into prevention and there must be more investment into lowing the mortality rates and closing the gap between Māori and non-Māori,” he says.
