Former Kiwi Ferns captain and NRLW player Honey Hireme-Smiler will become one of the first wahine to call an NRL game when she steps into the commentary box for this weekend’s Warriors vs West Tigers match.
She warmed up for the role by teaming with Paakiwaha host Dale Husband for last week’s Kiwi Ferns vs Tonga test.
She says she’s inspired by other women journalists like former rugby union player Melody Robinson.
“I suppose I never really tuned into who the commentators were, it was all about the game to me but as I have stepped into the field I’ve had the opportunity to work with some pretty amazing wahine along the way and I remember the first time I saw Melody Robinson doing the rugby I thought ‘she’s awesome’ and it was just awesome to see that – at the time I did not think I would be following in her footsteps,” Hireme-Smiler says.
