Patea rugby league club back
Rugby league is returning to south Taranaki.
Tere Diamond with his wife and sister-in-law have reestablished the Patea Warriors Rugby League Club, which went under in 1997 as a consequence of the shift of people out of the region following the closure of the Patea meatworks a decade earlier.
When he moved back to Patea five years ago after the death of his brother, Mr Diamond decided to restart the club as a way to connect with the small community.
In August the club, which now has eight teams and 150 active members, and the club will host its first Premiership match in over 20 years.
“We’re going to make a huge day of it. We’ve got our masters playing. We’ve got all our kids playing the curtain raisers during the day. I think we’re got three food trucks, a couple of coffee carts and waiting for confirmation of someone coming to film our game and it’s going to be huge and it’s going to be a massive event for the community,” Mr Diamond says.
