Volunteer award belies Seymour slur

Te Taitokerau MP Kelvin Davis says an accolade for the Tai Tokerau Border Control is richly deserved.
The roopu, which sprang up as a community response to enforcing Covid lockdowns, won the Māori section of this year’s Minister of Health Volunteer Awards.
Mr Davis says it shows the view of people like ACT leader David Seymour, who described them as thugs, was wildly off base.
“Here’s some community-minded, caring Māori who are worried about their mokopuna, their tamariki potentially catching Covid, volunteering to assist people on the side of the road to inform people about travel and all that through Covid and to hand out information, and to have someone describe them as a bunch of thugs was so unfair,” he says.
Mr Davis says the Tai Tokerau Border Control was an example of how Māori will mobilise during a crisis to keep their communities safe.
