A Māori tech entrepreneur wants put te reo Māori lessons on to PlayStation.
Cam Swainson-Whaanga says he’s working on porting his AFED Squad platform to PlayStation in time for the 50th anniversary of the 1972 Māori language petition in September.
It’s currently available online with four modules, including reo Māori, financial literacy, hauora and the O2Max asthma backgrounder.
It’s used by more than 13,000 students in 700 schools.
“Its quite a gamified, engaged, quiz type, there’s video lessons and then you do quizzes of all different varieties, it’s very hands on, sort of 3D, panoramic, photos at times, imagery to use for multi choice and just trying to go beyond the normal for the learning experience and a lot of teachers enjoying but it’s a free resource so even a lot of whanau and even a lot of lot of adults who want to learn te reo have been jumping on it so really exciting,” he says.
Mr Swainson-Whaanga says the main impediment to growth is finding coders and 3D modellers with te reo and tikanga skills.
