Vision Bus welcome sight in Māori communities
A Māori optometrist says an optometry clinic on wheels is a boon for rural and low income Maori communities.
Vision Bus Aotearoa is a project of the University of Auckland’s optometry and vision science department.
Teaching fellow Renata Watene says the offer of free exams and glasses has been life changing for many Māori who don’t have easy access to eye health services.
“It’s really given them back their independence. Something like reading the mail you get, being able to understand maybe a Covid leaflet that’s been sent out to them, they can read all that now and know where to go to get services and things so it’s been really well received by the community,” she says.
