Māori Speaker as PM fills Mallard, Faafoi gaps
Adrian Rurawhe is set to become Parliament’s Speaker after a reshuffle triggered by the resignations of Speaker Trevor Mallard and Kris Faafoi.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says Mr Faafoi had wanted to leave at the last election to send more time with his family, and she had asked him to stay on for a while.
Mr Faafoi’s Justice portfolio goes to Kiritapu Allen, and she also picks up an Associate Finance role.
His Broadcasting role goes to Willie Jackson.
Mr Mallard has been nominated to a European diplomatic posting.
The departure means another member for the Māori caucus, with Soraya Peke-Mason along with Dan Rosewarne coming into Parliament.
Poto Williams was replaced as Police Minister by Chris Hipkins. She remains in cabinet and picks up Conservation from Ms Allen and Disability Issues, freeing up Social Development Minister Carmel Sepuloni for a new role alongside Finance Minister Grant Robertson developing the social insurance scheme.
Mr Hipkins’ COVID-19 Response portfolio will go to Dr Ayesha Verrall, who also picks up Research, Science and Innovation.
Kieran McAnulty becomes a Minister outside of Cabinet with a specific focus on regional issues, including a delegation as Associate Local Government Minister assisting Nanaia Mahuta.
Michael Woods become Immigration Minister.
Priyanca Radhakrishnan moves into Cabinet, retaining all her current portfolios and adds Associate Workplace Relations and Safety with a focus on migrant exploitation.
And Meka Whaitiri adds food safety to her Customs portfolio.
The changes will take effect following a ceremony at Government House tomorrow afternoon.
