A 35,000 signature petition to ban seabed mining in Aotearoa will be delivered to Parliament this afternoon.
The petition from Kiwis Against Seabed Mining and Greenpeace will be received Green Party MP Eugenie Sage and Maori Party co-leader Debbie Ngarewa Packer, who led the response by her Ngati Ruanui iwi to plans to mine off south Taranaki.
She says if the project gets consented, communities and kaimoana from Taranaki to Paekakariki will be affected by the dumping of mining sludge.
The petition today is all part and parcel of trying to get the Labour Government with its Green partners to grow some balls really and ban seabed mining,” Ms Ngarewa Packer says.
She says even two or three seabed mining operations around New Zealand could do massive environmental damage.
