More matauranga needed in tertiary sector

Maori tertiary education advisory group Taumata Aronui says there needs to be more investment in teaching Maori knowledge systems.
The recommendation is included in a report released this week, Manu Kokiri – Maori Success and Tertiary Education, on what needs to be done to develop the best indigenously-inspired tertiary education system in the world.
Taumata Aronui chair Wayne Ngata says the tertiary education system needs to overcome generations of Maori not being able to engage with their own matauranga.
“Even though there’s some really exciting and great initiatives on the plate now in terms of what matauranga might be, we I don’t think are anywhere near what we could have and should have amongst our own education system,” he says.
Dr Ngata says Taumata Aronui wants to see initiatives to eliminate discrimination in the tertiary sector, and the nurturing of mana, health and wellbeing of Maori communities through tertiary education.
