Oranga Tamariki job done for Tukaki
Former Oranga Tamariki Ministerial Advisory Board chair Matthew Tukaki says change is happening at the agency it was time to move on.
Mr Tukaki stepped down yesterday and Tā Mark Solomon stepped up the lead the board, which has an ongoing monitoring role.
He’s overseen a review of the agency, its consequent restructuring and the appointment of a new leadership team.
He says he was determined to create a what next moment, unlike earlier reviews of child welfare such as Te Pūao Te Ata Tū report in the 1980s.
“My expectation now is that you achieve results. We need to ensure the number of children coming into the system is coming down. We’ve got to make sure that devolution in phase two to Māori hapū, iwi, Māori communities in particular is occurring and I’m confident that is going on. And when your job is done, and I get sick of people sticking around too long, once your job is done you mover on to the next mahi,” Mr Tukaki says.
