The Māori Party want the retirement age for Māori reduced to 57 years..
Co-leader Rawiri Waititi says with Māori dying on average seven to 10 years earlier than Pākehā, only 6 percent live to collect their super at age 65.
That means what they contribute in taxes to superannuation is lost to them and their whānau.
“We’re paying our contribution but we’re not reaping the benefits of that. That’s my challenge to all the other parties out there – follow the science, follow the statistics and do what’s right,” Mr Waititi says.
