Nanny’s mita fires pop tunesmith

Māori alt-pop singer THEIA says her next album is a tribute to the wahine toa who raised her.
TE KAAHU features nine waiata written in reo Māori.
That’s a big change for the Christchurch-born singer, who has worked with the likes of Charlie XCX and Sia.
She says growing up, she spent a lot of time listening to her grandmother, and she hopes they’re songs she would approve.
“I realised my mita, like my dialect, is so important in that I need to make the most of being able to hear my nanny speak it while I can and try to take that on and representing Ngāti Tīpa, my Waikato dialect and things like that,” she says.
TE KAAHU will be out on May 6
