More protection coming for Te Mata maunga
Hastings District Council is considering a plan to prevent building on the eastern face of Te Mata Peak.
The current building prohibition line sits on the 240-metre contour line of the maunga, from the ridgeline to just below the rocky outcrop, but the plan put to its Heretaunga Takoto Noa Māori standing committee would take the line down to the Waimārama Rd.
Mayor Sandra Hazlehurst says the peak is the district’s most culturally significant, outstanding natural landscape and the highest level of protection is needed, while also considering the land owners’ property rights.
