Sports deaths highlight men’s health crisis

A veteran sports broadcaster hopes the deaths of rugby greats Va’aiga Tuigamala and Joeli Vidiri will be a wake-up call for men to take their health seriously.
The deaths of Tuigamala at 52 and Joeli Vindiri at 48 came just weeks after the death of league legend Olsen Filipaina at 64.
Ken Laban says he sees Māori and Pasifika men dying far too early.
“I hope this will force conversations about our health and about our diet and about our wellbeing and whether there are enough resources going into the right areas,” he says.
Mr Laban says it’s the sort of challenge that should be taken up by the new Māori Health Authority.
