Border opening bumps Covid risk

A public health expert expects an extra bump in Covid-19 transmission with the opening of the border.
As of midnight fully vaccinated New Zealand citizens and residents can enter New Zealand from Australia and self-isolate upon arrival.
In a fortnight that’s extended to vaccinated New Zealand citizens and residents from anywhere in the world, the doors will also start opening for other groups throughout the year.
Collin Tukuitonga, the professor of public health at the University of Auckland, says policy is now being driven by business requirements rather than a pure public health response.
“I’m sure we’ll see more cases and the problem and we’ve spoken about this before is, of course, is Māori and Pasifika are most at risk,” he says.
