Meaningful mahi part of Māori job plan
Social Development and Employment Minister Carmel Sepuloni says the Government has listened to rangatahi in designing its new Māori employment action plan.
She says the 3.2 per cent unemployment rate is the lowest since 1986, but for Māori, it’s still at 7 per cent and even highr for rangatahi Māori.
Te Mahere Whai Mahi Māori aims to bridge that gap by addressing disparities, removing barriers, and creating pathways for Māori into jobs.
She says rangatahi made it clear what they want.
“They said that it’s about Māori being able to put kai on the table, have meaningful work, be happy, and be able to support their whānau, and that shouldn’t be too much to ask, but for so many people it has been,” Ms Sepulonisays.
