Puketawa Marae rebuild brings energy burst to Hokianga

A Hokianga marae is booked solid after a Provincial Growth Fund rebuild.
Puketawa Marae Komiti secretary Katene Eriksen says the reopening on Waitangi Day after almost 20 years of disuse brought many whānau back to the Utakura valley.
Tonight it will host kai hoe from the Whangaroa waka who’s coming over for tomorrow’s treaty commemoration and regatta at Māngungu, and then there are wānanga on tikanga and another to tell whānau about the people in the tupuna pictures.
“We’ve got whānau who have offered to do te reo classes. We’ve got whānau who have offered to do waiata classes. It’s a really exciting time for our people because we can do all the things we want to do in the house our tupuna built for us,” Ms Ericksen says.
