Iwi checks replaced by random cop stop
Police have shut their fixed checkpoints going into Taitokerau and will now set up spot checkpoints and roving patrols across the region.
Superintendent Tony Hill thanked iwi and Te Tai Tokerau Border Control for their help with the checkpoints at Uretiti and Maungaturoto.
He says there was an extremely high level of compliance, with only a small number of vehicles turned away.
Northland communities can expect to see an increased presence of police over the next few weeks as officers carry out reassurance patrols.
Those who are found to have travelled into Northland from Auckland without being fully vaccinated or with a negative COVID-19 test result in the previous 72 hours can face a fine.
