New agency to care for abuse survivors
A new independent body will oversee redress for people who suffered abuse while in the care of the state or religious institutions.
The Government today released a report from the Abuse in Care Royal Commission of Inquiry.
Internal Affairs Minister Jan Tinetti says the report tells what happened, now comes the work of addressing many years of avoidable harm.
Public Service Minister Chris Hipkins says the new redress system will be designed from the ground up in collaboration with Māori, who were heavily over-represented in state and faith-based care.
It will also be guided by the views of survivors and key communities, including Pacific peoples and disabled people.
