Coffee and ice cream as vax vans go southside
The first day of the Whānau Ora Battalion’s south Auckland surge has been a huge success.
More than 100 kaimahi in four teams from Te Whānau o Waipareira helped Manurewa Marae get out into the streets and gathering places.
Organiser Awerangi Tamihere says her team did 130 vaccinations in Randwick Park, an area where data indicated there were about 300 unvaccinated Māori, with almost all being Māori and 90 per cent being first doses.
“That blew us away with how they came out but it’s all about respect and honour and just the fact we are in the community showing we care about them, we can have a kōrero, we can talk with their whānau, ice creams for the babies, coffees and so forth, it was a great day, a wonderful whānau day,” she says.
The Whānau Ora Battalion is helping Papakura Marae today, and tomorrow it will be in Pukekohe and areas around the southern Manukau Harbour.
