MWWL still making big noise 70 years on
Māori Women’s Welfare League president Prue Kapua says the league needs to say active and challenging to keep attracting younger wāhine Māori.
The league is marking its 70th birthday, and Ms Kapua says it’s still fighting many of the issues on which it was founded, including, health, housing, structural racism, economic development and the role of Māori women in society.
It has also tackled issues like climate change.
“What we need is for our younger wāhine to see us as relevant and we can only do that if we are making noise, if we are getting traction, if we are actually addressing the issues that are important to them as well,” she says.
Prue Kapua’s term as president has been extended until next year because Covid restrictions means the league had to again reschedule its annual conference, this time until April 2022 in Ōtautahi.
