Iwi leaders are working with the Human Rights Commission to highlight housing rights.

Rahui Papa and Dame Naida Glavish of the National Iwi Chairs Forum helped develop the commission’s Framework Guidelines on the Right to a Decent Home in Aotearoa, which will be used as the basis for a national inquiry later this year.

Mr Papa says having a warm, safe home is a fundamental human right.

“Not only a house for the safety of someone to put their head down for the night, but it’s also a health issue, but it’s also an educational issue, it’s a community issue, the number of objectives and opportunities and the list goes on,” he says.

Rahui Papa says the housing guidelines and iwi housing initiatives are on the agenda for this week’s Iwi Chairs Forum in Whanganui.
