Family business lures away Ngati Awa CEO

Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa chief executive Leonie Simpson is stepping down after five years to run her family design business.
She says Toitu Design, which she started with husband Arekatera Maihi, is growing rapidly and requires a leader with managerial experience.
Toitu fuses Māori art with contemporary design including graphic art, whakairo and tā moko.
During her time with the rūnanga Ms Simpson has helped Ngāti Awa respond to the Edgecumbe floods of 2017, the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2019 eruption on Whakaari/White Island which killed 22 people.
