Tamariki Ora set for remake
The Government is promising better partnerships with Māori will be built into a revamp of Well Child Tamariki Ora.
The programme, which supports the health, development and wellbeing of all tamariki from birth until five years old, is delivered by Whānau Āwhina Plunket and more than 60 other predominantly Māori and Pacific non-government organisations.
Associate Health Minister Dr Ayesha Verrall says the programme is making a positive difference to the health and wellbeing of many children, but it’s outdated.
New Zealand’s population has changed significantly, and the programme has not kept pace with the needs of whānau; including the impact of poverty, drug use, mental health challenges, housing and family situations.
It also needs better integration with other health, maternity, social and early learning services.
Dr Verrall says there will be pilots to trial new approaches, and partnerships with Māori throughout the governance, design, delivery and monitoring of the programme.
