Māori ready for carbon economy role
The Māori Climate Commissioner says Māori are ready to walk alongside the Government to make a meaningful and locally-focused contribution to the climate emergency.
The Government yesterday tabled the Climate Change Commission’s proposed blueprint for what New Zealand needs to do to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
Donna Awatere Huata says a key change from the draft report was a call for a greater partnership with iwi so the transition to a low-emissions society is equitable for tangata whenua and all New Zealanders.
She says It is no longer good enough for the Government and its officials to seek consultation or use policy frameworks to assess impacts on Māoridom.
Māori must have a say over how their contributions are used.
They must be key participants in the carbon economy as envisaged by the Climate Change Commission.”
