Matariki chance to extend curriculum

The Green Party wants to see the school curriculum on Matariki extended so that it promotes a deeper understanding of how it relates to ecological sustainability and managing and harvesting food.
Co-leader James Shaw says with the Māori new year set to be marked by a public holiday from next year, it’s important people don’t just treat it as another day off.
"We really see an opportunity to help deepened understanding among all the people of Aotearoa about the origins of Matariki, what its significance is and by extension a bit more about Māori culture and history. We've got a public holiday. Now let's make sure it is actually meaningful," he says.
James Shaw says activities around Matariki would fit in well alongside the new history curriculum which is also being phased in.
