The Ngāti Ruanui Rūnanga will today challenge Stratford District Council’s decision not to introduce Māori wards for the 2022 local government elections.
Chair Haimona Maruera says it will make its voice at today’s long term planning hearing.
He says the council is preserving a racist model of governance by excluding a Māori voice at the decision-making table, but it dials up tangata whenua for karakia and pōwhiri.
Ngāti Ruanui will ask other Taranaki iwi to stop engaging with the council if it doesn’t change.
