Ngapuhi ready for governance changes
Ngāpuhi chair Wane Wharerau says now an independent review has checked the books, the rūnanga can get on with implementing the recommendations of a governance review.
Accounting firm Deloitte says a review of financial records since 2014 has found no incidences of dishonesty or fraud.
That should put to rest any lingering concerns caused by the sudden resignation of former chair Sonny Tau.
Mr Wharerau says the reviewers did suggest some improvements in expenditure control, invoicing and compliance with financial reporting standards, which will be implemented alongside work on constitutional and governance change.
"In terms of the governance, that's a bigger piece of work. That would include our documentation, the deed, elections, criteria for trustees, etc, etc, so quite a bit of work going on there," he says.
Te Rūnanga a Iwi o Ngāpuhi manages about $65 million in assets for the iwi, the bulk of it being fisheries quota but also some smaller ventures including a berry farm near Kaikohe.
