Maori employed up but unemployed more so
Finance Minister Grant Robertson is hailing the latest data from Stats NZ today that shows the recovering economy which is adding jobs, especially in construction.
The unemployment rate fell from 5.3 percent to 4.9 percent, and Māori employment is up 5,100 from a year ago.
But the Council of Trade Unions says the headline data hides weak spots in the labour market.
It says and Māori employment is up 5,100 from a year ago, and female unemployment continues to be much higher than male unemployment.
The rate of unemployment for young people (15- 29 year olds) rose from 8.4% to 10.1%.
The CTU says the government should target its expenditure through COVID-19 in ways that seek to redress that imbalance.
