Training for work key to prisoner rehabilitation
New Zealand First leader Winston Peters has promised more programmes that help prisoners rejoin society through training and support.
Kiwirail this week launched a programme funded by the Provincial Growth Fund that will allow it to take 20 prisoners on work release over the next two years and train them to become part of the workforce overhauling the rail network in Northland.
Mr Peters says prisoners with steady work, support and new skills have a far better chance at rejoining society and providing a positive contribution to their families and communities.
New Zealand First has also supported the Howard League’s prisoner drivers licensing programme, adult literacy classes and the Greyhound Great Mates Prison Programme.
As well as looking for more such programmes, it will work with penal reform advocates to provide the funding and support required for sound rehabilitation programmes.
