Maori votes could sway cannabis referendum
Getting Māori out to vote could make the difference for next month’s referendum on cannabis law reform.
Paul Manning from medical cannabis firm Helius Therapeutics, which has run regular polls to test New Zealanders’ attitudes on the issue, says at the moment support seems evenly poised.
However, when filtered by a question about how likely people are to actually vote, the nos creep ahead.
"This referendum on cannabis is very much going to come down to registering people to vote and getting particularly younger people and Māori out to vote because both those groups are supportive of cannabis in the main. I think that's going to be very important," he says.
Paul Manning says the majority of New Zealanders agree prohibition of cannabis has failed.
