Uawa community can’t wait to clear slash
Fire and smoke follow the rain in Uawa as residents continue to deal with forestry debris covering their beaches.
The small East Coast community has resorted to bonfires to clear the steady stream of logs and timber that wash down to their waterways after heavy rain.
Spokesperson Victor Walker blames a decade of systemic failures by council and forestry companies.
He says if they don't act the slash could stay on their shoreline for years.
"It's wood. It does despoil our pristine beach fronts and brings with it a whole lot of pollution but the sun will rise again tomorrow in Uawa and we will ensure if there is another rotation of foresty, we will be in a much better position." Mr Walker says.
