Smart tech could boost iwi aquaculture
The head of Te Arawa Fisheries says iwi need to plan for a future decline in wild fisheries.
At a Smart Māori Aquaculture Hui in Rotorua yesterday, Chris Karamea-Insley released a report identifying opportunities in the sector.
It was prepared by Bay of Plenty iwi along with Te Ohu Kaimoana and the Ministry for Primary Industries, with input from universities and crown research institutes.
He says there is increasing global demand for protein which iwi can tap into by working collaboratively, building on their existing businesses and adding new technologies such as high-value processing technology, remote monitoring and artificial intelligence.
