Tūwharetoa tasked with Taupō water tests
Waikato Regional Council has approved the transfer of some water monitoring functions to the Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board.
They include monitoring of summer bathing beach, regional rivers, rainfall and groundwater quality within the Lake Taupō catchment.
The council will retain overall responsibility for monitoring.
Council chair Russ Rimmington says 60 per cent of submissions were in favour of the transfer.
It’s the first time since the Resource Management Act was passed 30 years ago that the provision to transfer functions to an iwi authority has been used.
