Māori providers lead mental health response
Four Waikato Māori health providers have secured an integrated primary mental health and addictions contract in what is being hailed as a major step for indigenous heath treatment models.
Lady Tureiti Moxon, the managing director of Te Kōhao Health, says the four providers will lead work for both whānau Māori and the general population.
They have the backing of the Waikato DHB and all three public health organisations in the rohe.
She says western models have failed Māori
"If the western way had worked we would be all very well and doing well thank you very much but that isn't the case and this is our way of being able to say and do what we've always believed, which is to do for our people what is solely ours," Lady Moxon says.
The other providers are Te Korowai Hauora o Hauraki, Taumarunui Community Kōkiri Trust and Raukura Hauora o Tainui.
