Sallies open housing haven out west
Waikato Tainui kaumātua were on hand before dawn this morning to bless a new Salvation Army social housing complex at Westgate.
Te Manaaki Tāngata includes 20 two-bedroom homes and two one-units near the Sallies West Auckland service centre at Don Buck Rd.
Greg Foster, its national director of social housing, says the Salvation Army has been housing New Zealanders for 120 years.
Last year it opened a 50-unit complex at Royal Oak, and it's building in Flatbush.
He says the tenants will be drawn from the housing register maintained by Kainga Ora.
"In our last complex at Royal Oak we had a big percentage of our tenants are Māori or Pasifika and they have support from either the Salvation Army or other social service providers," he says.
The 46 units at Flatbush should be ready by February.
