Hosking says Newstalk ZB wants to apologise to John Tamihere as on 11 December 2018, published payments made by the North Island Whanau Ora Commissioning agency, Te Pou Matakana which received funds from the Commission of Maori Development, Te Puni Kokiri, and paid it to its shareholders. He adds Newstalk ZB accepts Te Pou Matakana was entitled to receive funds from Te Puni Kokiri and there was nothing improper in spending it on their shareholders. Hosking says the way their reporting was worded could have been taken as Tamihere benefiting from the payments but he did not and Newstalk ZB apologises for the article.

Background:

Proceedings filed in the High Court at Auckland allege material in an episode of Mike's Minute, broadcast on Newstalk ZB and published on the NZ Herald website in December 2018, "recklessly" defamed Tamihere. Hosking and Herald parent company NZME denied Tamihere's claims. The comments in question related to $600,000 of taxpayer money paid through Te Puni Kokiri as part of the Whanau Ora programme.
