Safe harbour sought for political ambitions

Te Taitokerau MP Kelvin Davis says he’s keen to see Port of Auckland operations move to Whangārei.
His colleague Shane Jones opened New Zealand Firsts campaign for the Northland and Whangārei seats yesterday with a renewed call for the port to move north, despite a new report done for Transport Minister Phil Twyford saying Manukau was the best option.
Mr Davis says there have already been a lot of reports on the topic, and what people want now is certainty – and a safe harbour.
"The Manukau Harbour is notorious for shipwrecks historically. I really can't see a port on the western side of New Zealand. There's a reason we in Ngāpuhi say the west coast is te taitama tāne, a rough and masculine coast, and the east side is te taitama o wahine, the calm and passive coast," he says.
