Water storage scheme should boost Māori economy
Irrigation New Zealand says Māori agribusiness will benefit significantly if the support for water storage is included in the Government’s plan Fit for a Better World primary sector plan comes to fruition.
Chief executive Elizabeth Soal says the plan launched today acknowledges water storage as a key enabler for boosting productivity.
She says access to water provides for land-use flexibility which can also contribute to lower emissions; supports community resilience; and assists in climate change preparedness.
The new strategy also identifies potential growth in horticulture – which is largely reliant on accessible water.
Ms Soal says the sector is keen to see details on how water storage infrastructure will be developed and funded.
