Korihi competition seeking COVID songs
Composers and kapa haka are being offered putea for songs about the COVID-19 lockdown.
KORIHI judging convenor Pere Wihongi, himself an award-winning composer, says judges will pick two waiata from each of the seven regions, based on the Maori electorates.
They're looking for composition, originality and use of te reo Maori.
The 14 finalists will perform their waiata on a Maori Television spectacular on August 29, with the overall winner decided by audience text voting.
"It's trying to create more spaces and more opportunities for whanau to create waiata and of course to encourage the legacy of telling our history and telling our story through waiata a huge part of our history now is COVID, the inevitable mate uruta we have had to face," Mr Wihongi says.
Te Taitokerau has closed their entries but submissions can still be made by emailing an entry form on the Korihi Facebook page
