Haka to bring Black Lives Matter kaupapa home
An organiser of Sunday’s Black Lives Matter in Auckland says it’s a chance for Māori to reflect on the position in Aotearoa and their opposition to violence and racism.
It follows on from the first March on June 1, which one of the largest protests seen in central Auckland in recent years.
It also reflects the fact there is continuing unrest in the United States over police violence, sparked by the murder of Minneapolis man George Floyd.
Hira Moewaka Latimer says after speeches at Aotea Square, the crowd will march down Queen St to the United States consulate on Customs Street.
"When we reach the consulate we will have a mass haka and a siva as well as some DJs to bring a little bit of aroha and give everyone a space to express a diverse group of cultures," she says.
Hira Moewaka Latimer says the march is a chance to highlight what organisers see as complacency about systemic racism within the New Zealand police.
