Covid-19 Update for Māori 11 April 2020 | Overall Decline in New & Active Cases; Rate of Māori & Pacific Increase is Lower than non-Māori/Pacific
Dr Rawiri Taonui
1. Total Cases
There were 2 more deaths today. Thoughts and prayers go to their whānau at this time. Alongside that sad news, there are several positive signs. New Zealand has 29 new cases today and 1312 in total. Apart from yesterday, this continues a steady decline in new cases (89-67-54-50-29-44-29).
422 people have recovered. Active Cases (the total of all cases less those who have recovered) have fallen from 930 five days ago to 890.
Māori Cases
Total & Percentage
There are 7 new Māori cases and 110 in total. Māori cases increase to 8.4% overall. The rate of increase is lower than for non-Māori.
Pacific Peoples Cases
There are 2 new Pacific cases. Pacific are 4.1% of all cases, the rate of increase is lower than for non-Pacific.
This next graph shows the numerical increase of Māori and Pacific cases through April compared to non-Māori. While we have an upward trend, the increase has been slower for our communities.
Testing
I will have a more detailed update tomorrow re: testing. The overall picture is that there is some good testing occurring in our communities. However, testing varies by DHB. The government is not releasing those figures. This is not helpful. There is a significant effort from Māori and Pacific across all DHBs which is great. However, with better information we would know where to direct our energies with more focus and effect.
Tomorrow’s update will also have graphs re: facemasks. Wear facemasks in public especially in supermarkets
Noho haumaru, stay safe and self-sovereign, Dr Rawiri Taonui
