Tamihere selection gives momentum to Maori Party surge
Māori Party president Che Wilson says the party is on track to run candidates in all seven Māori electorates.
Waipareira head John Tamihere was endorsed as the party’s Tāmaki Makaurau candidate the weekend, taking his battle with Whānau Ora Minister Peeni Henare over funding for the commissioning agencies onto the hustings.
He joins a line up which so far includes Debbie Ngarewa-Packer in Te Tai Hauāuru, Rawiri Waititi in Waiariki and Heather Te Au-Skipworth in Ikaroa Rāwhiti.
“The people also will have a strong candidate in Tāmaki Makaurau and therefore all of our seats are now becoming quite important for us,” Mr Wilson says.
He believes the shift of the Tāmaki Makaurau boundary to include Te Atatu South could boost Mr Tamihere’s chances.
