Peters chafes at donation scrutiny

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says the leaking of information about donations is part of a dirty campaign aimed at crippling the party in the elections.
He wants to see the legal opinion is behind the Electoral Commission’s decision to ask the police to look into whether a trust linked to the party should have reported the donations.
The police passed the complaint on to the Serious Fraud Office.
Mr Peters says some media outlets have been quick to use information stolen from New Zealand First, but they're now showing a similar deal about a National Party case where leader Simon Bridges and former National MP Jami-Lee Ross appeared to discuss breaking up a donation to avoid disclosure laws.
"And its leader who is all over the tape recording establishing that thing that led to the court cases is saying that he is innocent. Worse still you have a moronic bunch of people in the media saying 'we can move on here.' Excuse me. there will be no moving on while this is going on and this is not the first and only – there are countless cheques like that. That is my inside information," he says.
He’s not concerned the latest complaint will lose New Zealand First any Māori support, because they don’t trust what they are hearing from the media.
