Tikanga challenge to settle law
A leading New Zealand law firm believes recognition of tikanga Māori is transforming the law.
Chapman Tripp senior associate Te Aopare Dewes says references to tikanga are now more prevalent in legislation and increasingly being recognised by the courts as an integral part of decision-making.
The firm is holding an invitation-only symposium on the issue at Ōrākei Marae today to mark the 10th anniversary of its Te Waka Ture practice which focuses on iwi and Māori organisations.
Ms Dewes says iwi boards have a responsibility to manage the collectively owned assets of their people in order to achieve cultural, social and economic aspirations.
This responsibility includes holding the Crown and local government to account and to ensure tikanga values are recognised, as promised under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
