Tuia 250 Flotilla ends voyage at Mahia

The Tuia 250 flotilla has finished its 10-week voyage at Mahia.
The three waka hourua, Haunui, Ngahiraka Mai Tawhiti and Fa’afaite, are taking part in a festival organised by Rongomaiwahine, along with Te Tairāwhiti from Gisborne, and Te Matau-ā-Māui from Napier.
Tuia 250 co-chair Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr says the Tui Mai Tawhiti waka festival acknowledges the naming of the area, Te Māhia-Mai-Tawhiti, by the high priest Ruawharo, who came there aboard the Takitimu.
He says the Tuia 250 Voyage has been visiting sites of ancestral significance for tangata whenua to highlight local histories and also to ensure the mātauranga of waka building and traditional navigation is passed on to the next generation.
The voyage will finish tomorrow with a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
