Kai Ora a winner for Northland whanau
A Northland funding scheme which supports communities to grow and eat nutritious, sustainably-grown local food has been commended in the Economic Development New Zealand 2019 Best Practice Awards.
The Kai Ora Fund is a partnership between primary heath organisations, the Northland District Health Board, councils, Te Puni Kōkiri, and, regional economic development agency Northland Inc.
Economic Development New Zealand chair Pam Ford says the initiative has been recognised for its inclusive approach to providing food to communities suffering from high deprivation.
This year 37 new projects have been funded, including 33 projects led by Māori communities and whānau.
Te Puni Kōkiri regional manager Tui Marsh says it’s exciting to see the energy in the community around growing food, and she expects many of the projects will have a lasting impact on whānau around Tai Tokerau.
